Welcome home to La Grange. The village of La Grange was first known as Kensington after the name of the first local Post Office. When Franklin Dwight Cossitt found out there was a neighboring area with the same name he re-named the village La Grange in honor of his hometown in TN. The village of La Grange was originally incorporated in 1879 and founded by Cossitt. Prior to incorporating citizens started moving to the area in the 1930's leaving Chicago to enjoy the peace and relative quiet of rural life. Cossitt who made his money building a successful wholesale grocery business bought hundreds of acres of farmland in the surrounding area. Laying out streets, planting trees, donating land for community use buildings, and building homes, Cossitt set out to build the ideal village. La Grange really started to boom soon after the Great Fire of 1871 as citizens fled the ills of the city. La Grange was perfectly suited with an convenient commute and lots of opportunities to accommodate them.
